@Jeremy Whistler some people just have a hard time understanding sarcasm, especially in text. I know that I've had a hard time understanding it sometimes. Just accept the fact that people won't always get your sarcasm, why can't you just accept it? Its really nothing to get mad over. If you want though, you can always put a tone indicator in the end of your comment, so people stop thinking youre serious.

@VioLet 🫶🏻 Okay, I get the sense you've never taken any form of an English class or at least never payed attention? That statement of yours shows so much disregard for the complexity of modern language. Additionally, you're acting like I said something controversial or risky. I did not, I made a statement that regardless of how you take it should really not bother anyone. So it wasn't what you called it which I won't even type because I don't swear, it was a simple statement that you are grossly dramaticizing. If I wanted to simply make it clear thatn I wouldn't have needed to comment it because that much is obvious.

What's SO frustrating about how terrible the Big Fib is, is that it's not just a clever and interesting idea. Being able to listen critically to other's arguments and be able to decide who is speaking rationally from a place of knowledge vs. who is making up things to further their own viewpoint - I CANNOT THINK OF A MORE IMPORTANT SKILL TO TEACH CHILDREN TO HAVE IN THIS DAY AND AGE.

Hey drew, I know you’ll never see this but there’s actually a little more to the wedding vs house show then you think, the people who choose the wedding over the house are actually taking the better option. Danny made a video that you probably watched but when someone is given something, whether it be a house or a car or any large item, there’s hidden prices that have to be paid for that the show or the giver doesn’t cover, all of these people choosing the wedding probably have accountants they discussed with that told them the wedding was a better option as a wedding is an event the show will pay for with the budget given as the houses are used as write offs that end up having hidden expenses that could be unaffordable for these individuals. So most who are choosing the weddings are actually making a very smart choice, better to be gifted an event you will never forget with everything you’d ever want and that you don’t have to pay for over a house that will end up costing you just as much as a regular purchase of a house without the chance to get a loan from a bank as the house would already be their property without the ability to know the loan necessary to pay for such an expensive luxury. Get a free wedding and then buy a simple house with what you can afford sounds like the best advice from an accountants standpoint.

    • PickledParsleyParty
      PickledParsleyParty Hace 15 días

@Lumpy Mushroom you can also sell a house. You can't sell that wedding you had and are struggling to remember 10 years later.
3 days after the honeymoon, I guarantee every couple is sitting in their apartment saying "well that was fun. Really wish we had a house right now, though."

    • lethe.archive
      lethe.archive Hace un mes +5

i think you misunderstood the premise of the show or maybe i have.
yes when you accept large prizes, even non cash prizes, you have to pay taxes on the fair market value of these items as earned income. so if someone offers you a free house or a free wedding, unless you can afford to pay taxes on say 300k of precieved earned income you should take the lower cash prize. however the premise of this show is that the couple have a set cash budget of their own money that they’ll either use as a down payment for a house (thus mortgage) or will be the entire cost of their ceremony/reception of their wedding. so basically the majority of the contestants are choosing to nice party over a life long investment shortly before home values exploded.
your analysis assumes that they cant afford the house they are getting a mortgage on with post the 2007/8 housing crash is impossible.

    • Cheeky Ham
Cheeky Ham Hace 2 meses +11

@Natalia you aren't allowed to sell the house or car for at least a year. there comes the list of hidden terms and conditions that they don't show on the series/ giveaway videos. You should really watch Danny's video where he explains what ACTUALLY happens after they have won. The world isn't an easy place to be.

    • Madi
      Madi Hace 2 meses +16

you would be right, except, to my understanding, they're not getting a _free_ house. they're getting free proffessional support on picking the house, getting a mortgage, and that sort of more difficult stuff that comes with buying a house.

    • Natalia
      Natalia Hace 3 meses +4

??? They can sell the house immediately. Then pay for a wedding and a down payment on a more affordable house. Real estate is money in your pocket and you'd be foolish to pick a stressful event over a tangible item that only increases in value

I love how Bojack Horseman kind of tricks the viewer in the beginning. You really do think you are watching some typical dumb cartoon show, and then BAM, shit gets real. I remember there was one scene where Bojack and others do drugs, and then things get trippy (if you know, you know), and suddenly you realize this isn't some random cartoon. Quickly after that, you find yourself hit hard and crying over the shit that goes down.

Don't underestimate something just because it's a cartoon, Animation can be one of the most spectacular mediums for a show/movie around, tons of stuff you can do with them that's impossible in live action and some can have amazing style and effort in their visuals.
Whether is be a goofy casual wacky comedy or an emotional story driven narrative or even a mixture of the two it has huge potential as an art form.
Just look at Avatar: The Last Airbender, Adventure Time, The Amazing World Of Gumball, Death Note, Kill La Kill, BeastStars, Invincible.

I started watching Bojack Horseman a couple months ago. And I love the show I really do but the first season was hard for me to watch because someone mentioned to me that the guy who assaulted me in highschool also used to watch it. This really fucked with my head and made it to where I could barely watch the show. I’m over that feeling now. I talked to a counselor therapist person and that helped me a lot. But hearing one of my favorite Internet personalities recommend that show helps so much too. He can be a really great improve comic if it's allowed but Disney has always been kinda rigid about that sort of thing. Ooh, I'm getting goosebumps thinking about Bojack Horseman.
Such great writing, and daring to stray so far from the norms:
That underwater episode where he becomes a parental custodian for a day and there is _no speech:_ The only other thing I've seen that was as bold as this was the deaf person episode of _Master of None_, which actually eschewed all sound during the deaf segment, IIRC.
The episode that was all a single eulogy monologue, "Free Churro"... For a visual medium, especially a cartoon, that was quite daring, too.
_Bojack Horseman_ is something special alright.
It's the cartoon equivalent of _Louie_

Such a good point. My theory, though, is that people who've had access to a lot of privileges, especially early on, ironically don't have the ability to reflect on it that well, because privilege breeds apathy. They don't have the need to develop a lot of emotional intelligence, so they just never do (if they stay in their life of privilege, at least). I feel like if she was able to live a 'normal' life for a bit, she'd have some more perspective, but she's so famous at this point that it kinda seems impossible.
She's definitely not the 'poor me' victim as much as the show tries to portray, but I don't know realistically, if someone like her would have much of an opportunity to truly reflect on the life of privilege and weird amount of power (that she barely had any say in) that her family have been handed.

Hey hi if y’all could stop rushing to be woke that’d be great, take a deep breath and remember that the word existed long before NPD was a thing. Work backwards- the word existed FIRST, with an established definition, and was then used for the personality disorder. Why? Because it perfectly fucking describes their behavior, and is widely used as a descriptor still.
Woke is good, ‘woke’ and virtue signaling are NOT. The next time you want to REE into the void of the internet, make sure what you think is factual is *actually* factual. Especially when it comes to serious topics like mental illness. Even the ‘narcissists handbook’ isn’t me armchair diagnosing her with NPD. Its flippant humor, and fitting of her selfish, entirely vapid, materialistic and self-absorbed persona. Im going to guess the people that took fake-offense to this non-issue of a comment are very young, because black and white thinking and self-righteous preachy yet totally incorrect behavior is typical of the tween/teen crowd.
tl;dr- Stuff can be two things. Even two similar things. Especially if one thing comes first and is the basis for the naming and framing of the second thing based off the first thing.

I read this quote somewhere and it basically said that, mental illnesses may explain your behaviour but they never excuse it. And it fits perfectly here, BoJack’s neglect during his childhood, his alcoholism, the subsequent depression etc explains his history of shitty behaviour yet it can never be used as a way to avoid responsibility. At some point one has to take accountability for their actions and BoJack Horseman does such a terrific job explaining it.

But when you are given money, its so different. It's a click away, literally anything. It must get boring af. I think she's dumb making a show to say that, and I'm not ruining the joke, it's silly she put herself in this situation, buttt it's not right imo to disregard a human's feelings, because I think she has a right to feel that way. Interestingly enough, The Big Fib is actually based on a podcast that now has the same name but was originally called Pants On Fire. The podcast also has a robot sidekick (though the robot on the podcast has a different name), but I think the podcast robot actually does add to the show while the TV robot is just annoying. This is definitely an example where Disney fucked up the execution. If they had brought in the podcast crew to make the TV show and given them full creative control it would have been a lot better. Before Disney got involved, I felt the podcast was a really great kids show which adults could enjoy too. Now I think it's still high quality but has lost some magic, and the TV show just doesn't do it justice.

      Humanthefinn Hace un año +1

@Rising Sunfish It's just an assumption that people may think the show is about. For me, it didn't cross my mind that it's glorifying cynical behavior. You, the viewer, knows that what they're doing espcially the protagonist; are wrong. But weird enough, you somewhat understand why they're doing it. (Even the characters themselves are self-aware of their behavior but couldn't help themselves to commit the same mistakes over again. That's why it's somewhat relatable). Again, imo.. they did great in storytelling and depicting human flaws. But if this show will trigger you such as having depressive tendencies or severe anxiety (etc.), it's better to stay away and choose a series that will make you more comfortable. Sorry for my grammar.

    • Rising Sunfish
      Rising Sunfish Hace un año

@Alara I have noticed a lot of people warning that it gets hard to watch and can be triggering to people with depressive tendencies. I'm not asserting anything about a show I haven't watched, I wanted to ask in this thread if those impressions were misguided or not. If it's something that might reignite the ol' "actually nobody wants you around" paranoia then I'd like to be aware of that before diving in.
