Even 14 years after unofficially retiring from acting, Mary-Kate and Ashley are still two of the richest and most famous celebrities in the world. Let's take a look back at some of the most overlooked aspects of their early acting careers, including a potential scam that sounds ahead of its time and a very specific event service they helped pioneer that doesn't really seem to make sense in any time period.
This is probably the longest I've worked on a video since that Vine retrospective I made last year. Please reward my efforts by paying close attention and telling your grandparents about it when you're done.

In that interview the girls literally had eye bags under their eyes, they looked so tired and like they didn't want to be there. How can you let your child go through with that and be okay with it?
Edit: Also I find it interesting how you look up their mother and not a lot is known about her outside of her children because she keeps a private life. How fucked is that, give yourself a private life while your children slave away making you money

Not trying to make excuses for the mom but I read somewhere that the contract the mom signed basically forfeit a lot of her rights as a mom. They wouldn’t even let her on set majority of the time because it “distracted” the girls and co actors even changed their diapers. Almost every man from full house had changed their diapers at one point. The mom should have fought harder but from what I understood from past research was that they were ALWAYS on the go so there wasn’t much time to fight because they were always in the middle of doing something else. The mom also didn’t even want them to be famous at first. Somebody noticed and recommended the girls and the mom thought it would be a fun short experience but it just kept snowballing after their first appearance

It’s unforgivable what happened to these kids. They had no childhood and as a result they have deep inset trauma and likely had a difficulty separating themselves from each other and cameras. What disturbs me perhaps the most is just how obsessed grown adults were with these children. They were adorable, yes, but the level of obsession is so messed up. I genuinely don’t think the amount of money they earned from being forced to sell their childhood could ever make up for or repair the damage done to them. I just hope now they get to live their lives in peace.

    • Gianna
      Gianna Hace 5 meses +14

This happens far too often with child actors. I used to watch Shirley Temple movies all the time. My grandmother used to watch them when she was little so she introduced me to them, and I thought they were awesome and watched nearly all of them. Then I read more about her childhood, and gosh it was fcked up. She was nearly raped at the age of six multiple times, and she was also nearly raped at around 14, and I believe a few times as a late teen and adult. She was on this show called Baby Burlesk since she was around 3, and it was a bunch of little babies performing parodies of adult movies, and making sexual jokes while wearing huge diapers with pins holding them together. Apparently every time a kid misbehaved on set they were put into a box with an ice cube on the floor, and it got warm in the box so they stood in freezing ice water for hours. There were so many more messed up things about her career, and I'm sure lots of other child stars went through that.

    • Gianna
      Gianna Hace 5 meses +18

@Ejsa fara Who knows how much money that they earned was given to them, and therapy doesn't automatically fix everything, and they're not even that expensive, at least around where I live. They still have to work through the trauma, and they have a specific sort that most people never experience. Being rich won't help the trauma. I had a shitty childhood, and while I'd be happy to be rich it wouldn't fix my trauma.

    • Nycto
      Nycto Hace 7 meses +7

@Ejsa fara Still doesn't make their "childhood" any less traumatizing. No amount of money can save you from the manipulation and abuse they went through. Their bank account is just a cherry on top. Now they get sh*t on for not being happy. Mental illnesses can creep on you like that. They probably already feel guilty for not being happy with what they have. They were never allowed to be human beings from the very beginning, now they're being shamed by the people around them for not showing a certain emotion. And the thing is, because they weren't allowed to have a normal childhood and express those emotions, they just can't. And now they're also being shamed for that.
The gaslighting, manipulation, and abuse can never be reversed with money. Money can help in different ways, but it can't solve all your problems. Especially when it comes to your well being.

    • Ejsa fara
Ejsa fara Hace 8 meses +6

imo, theyre still well off, plenty of people go thru horrible trauma, financial problems, people getting shot in their families, rehoming, abuse and so on, at least these twins have enough money to go to a therapist and have some days off, not like we, the plebs, have to work thru the pain :b i mean, if i have a messed up childhood, at least i wanna be rich XD

As I know from his interviews, Macaulay Culkin didn’t choose to act. He was 4-5 when he ‘started’ the business. Also he had an abusive father, mentally and physically. He said he didn’t want to do it anymore, but his father never heard him. If Richie Rich wasn’t a flop, he wouldn’t get to chance to get out from the spotlight. Being a big child star must be hard. You get treated like this and then become the example of “What’s wrong with the child stars?” I don’t even want to talk about the pedophiles in the industry. Disgusting.

    • cursed mailman

I think his point was more that they had an opinion on acting and either wanted or were forced to be in the business, whereas for these two, they were literal infants. They went straight from the womb to the TV set. The difference between a 4 year old and a newborn is immeasurably different.

It always makes me so sad when celebrities talk about mental health issues and how hard some things are for them and people just reply "well boohoo, you're rich and famous. Try being working class and see how you like that". While being poor sucks, the entire kardashian fortune could not get me to live like them. Always watched, always scrutinized, everything you do has to fit your brand. Even with those tweets in the beginning of covid of stars complaining they can't leave their billion dollar mansion, yes it was tasteless but rich people are allowed to have emotions. I'd rather be quarantined in a tiny apartment than stalked, glorified and cyberbullied for decades.

I adored Mary-Kate and Ashley as a kid. Seen literally all their movies, read all their books, even had their Barbie dolls. This was around when their 'When in Rome' movie came out. I thought they were just the luckiest kids ever. If only I'd known how truly miserable they probably were..

Money doesn’t buy happiness or fulfillment, it buys comfort and convenience. But what really annoys me about people who say “I’d rather have a billion dollars than a childhood” is that they’re totally missing the point. Child actors often aren’t GIVEN that choice, it’s made for them. And having a normal childhood is something that most of us take for granted, because we had one. I have no idea what it’s like to grow up like the Olsen twins and neither does anyone else who says stuff like that. The things that happen to us in our childhoods help shape us, and not always for the better.

It's so heartbreaking. The Sprouse Twins have also been famous literally their entire lives. They were the son Uncle Jesse and his wife had (please don't shoot me it's been like 14 years since I've seen full house I can't remember her name I'm sorry) I think they had a few short years between that and going back into acting (I believe the next thing was the movie Big Daddy) but acting and making money to wasn't shoved down their throats. So they still enjoyed acting for a while. They were clearly given a choice. And the Olsen Twins might very well have been like that, taking roles every now and then, of the limelight wasn't shoved upon them so hard. If they were given a chance to nurture a love for acting instead of having literally no choice. Maybe they wouldn't have wanted to act at all, we will never know. But it is a perfect example of not forcing your kids to be something they don't want to be. Two Twins who were acting since literal babies, one set had no choice and the other did.

@Bashful Wolfo That is weird. I learned about American history all throughout my school years, from elementary up thru high school. Learned about other histories from around the world but it mostly involved the US (and the wars and fights we started back in the days while hostily taking over South American countries for corporate profit).
But maybe I just had better schools and teachers? Sounds like it to me.
I live up in the Cascadia region. And most other people I know from my area also had good history teachers.
Sucks your school did not. Makes it far too easy for misinformation to take up space instead. Which is just damaging and hard to overcome once it sets in someone's mind.

I like to compare them to their younger sister Elizabeth Olsen!
Elizabeth had a more normal childhood, now she's getting big roles and does a lot of interviews. In those interviews she quite down to earth, open and has a sunny personality.
Compare that to her older sisters, who rarely do interviews and can come across quite cold, and only talk about the subject that their came to talk about.
I think it really shows how growing up in the spotlight (without your choice) can have a negative impact.

      @Yonicorn
We aren’t even self aware at 9months old, so I’m not sure that is a valid point. If you sit an infant in an excavator seat, are they working? They don’t know what an excavator is, or what they are, or how to move their limbs, or use a toilet, feed themselves.............. if you leave them for a day or so, they will shit themselves and die of exposure/hunger/thirst. That life form isn’t aware they exist, or what existence is.............. let alone the concept of work.
How is it you think this blob of helpless goo can process their environment and come to the conclusion they’re being forced to work?
But yes, young children actually do WORK, and they don’t have a choice in the matter, nor do they get paid.
So, like I said.. in adulthood due to their ‘work’ as a child, they won’t ever have to work again, or worry about money in any way shape or form. Their money gives them access to the best help available.
So not only do they not have to work, don’t suffer any sort of financial issues, they also have access to the worlds leading medical professionals.
The flip side of this coin is the child who worked an actual job who was given a terrible view on money from it, a horrible association with the concept of work, yet due to being poor has to do it for the next 50 years while not being able to afford to see a low tier college graduate councillor, self medicating, then being punished by the legal system, because that addiction is a ‘choice’.
I’ll take the childhood trauma that leaves me with a financial empire, thanks.

I agree. I had a shitty childhood but was blessed that my parents were well-off (not rich, but definitely could get most things I wanted). I was overworked, there was so much pressure on my sister and I, and my parents obsessed with raising geniuses or something. My sister was forced into becoming an Engineer-Lawyer, while I was forced into becoming a Doctor-Lawyer. We both even took Masters Degrees on the side. Why? Just because our parents wanted us to. No student loans as our parents paid for everything. I barely left the house when I was younger, never had a social life, just always studied. My mom would also hire private tutors for us during summer vacation so we won't "lose our momentum."
